Responsible AI, for Indonesia’s banks.

With PERBANAS and IBM, we built the first industry-wide view of AI readiness and governance in Indonesian banking, and a playbook member banks can put to work.

01 — The challenge

AI is moving into core banking. Governance is not keeping up.

AI adoption in Indonesian banking is moving from pilots into core operations, yet the industry had no shared framework for responsible AI governance. Without aligned standards for data infrastructure, governance and talent, banks risk deploying AI that is non-compliant, insecure or unethical, with the regulatory, reputational and operational exposure that follows.

02 — Our approach

Evidence from banks, regulators and academia, in one room.

We combined a sector-wide survey with senior qualitative work and regulatory input, so the playbook would reflect how banks actually operate.

  • Data & AI Readiness Index survey distributed to 100+ PERBANAS member banks
  • Multi-stakeholder FGD with 30 decision-makers from KBMI I–IV banks across IT, data, risk and compliance
  • Regulatory input sessions with OJK, Bank Indonesia and Komdigi representatives
  • Academic advisory on human-centred AI from Universitas Indonesia and Keio University
  • IBM global practice on enterprise AI architecture and governance frameworks
  • Half-day workshop for 100 participants on practical responsible-AI pathways

03 — The outcome

Governance clarity, not technology appetite, is the constraint.

Banks with formal data governance frameworks showed 3× higher confidence in scaling AI, regardless of bank size or KBMI classification. The engagement delivered:

  • A Responsible AI Governance Playbook for PERBANAS member banks
  • A Data & AI Maturity Index report with industry-wide benchmarking
  • Workshop materials and talent development recommendations
  • A regulatory alignment summary covering OJK and PDP Law requirements
